Maybe you could just cut a notch in a newer pot if you don't have any  
luck with a old stock replacement.  Or just try a new one and see if  
you can hear any difference.  It seems unlikely that a difference  
would be heard since most pots are + - 20%.  Or you could add a  
resistor to the pot to make it a bit under 1M if that notch is simply  
making the pot 900K.
