He's not worried about the photonic surface reflection distortion those 
lamps will induce in those stylii? Maybe one of the lamps is 
incandescent and he uses it to 'warm up' certain album. I expect the 
fluorescent one would 'cool off' overly warm recordings. Or maybe he 
just plays his records in the dark.

On a more "serious" note, I'm kind of surprised the audiophile crowd 
hasn't picked up on Power Twist Link Belt for belt drive turntables like 
that. Maybe I just haven't seen it.
