Also while we're continuing this topic of variable playback rate systems, the Akai S900/950 are also (to my surprise) variable rate. It's actually very much like the Kurzweil K250. Two programmable counters per voice clock a 12 bit DAC and switched capacitor filter, followed by a VCA. It's all off the shelf hardware.
I'm not sure about the older Akai S612/700/750, but the later S1000 is fixed rate, and I think the MPC60 is some cheaper ASIC-based fixed rate thing. You'd think there would be some shared lineage, but there's much less hardware inside the MPC60. Haven't seen a schematic, just photos.
Oh, also I'm working on an algorithm to emulate the image frequencies generated by this variable rate/zero order hold playback. It should be perfectly band limited.
