Apparently, there is a totally different SHARP chip with the same
number:

Automotive - so it's no surprise they have'em by the thousands...

I've found a number of places that have hundreds or even thousands in stock. Sometimes they'll even show a photo of the chip, and sure enough, it shows a Roland IR3109. But the description may show Sharp as the manufacturer and/or call it a 14 pin DIP (IR3109 is 16 pin DIP), and sometimes the functional description of the chip doesn't match Roland's. I don't know if the name IR3109 is used for more than one type of chip or what's going on. I got so fed up with the unknown and getting no response to my email, I followed the tip of another AH member and bought a used "beat to shit" PH-2 phaser for $25 and extracted the two IR3109's myself.
