Hi Sebastian,
I was able to bring back to life the backlight on an Akai S3000XL
sampler by replacing the fluorescent thing with a set of SMD LEDs,
assembled in a strip of protoboard. To spread the light evenly I used
parts of an old LCD display acrylic/translucent sheet that was removed
from a dead instrument. As the original piece of acrylic was much
larger, I had to cut/polish it. Only wiring I could use for the LEDs was
that thin insulated wire stolen from an 80-way hard drive cable.
Now, I am not sure there will be room for that in your synth display,
the one in the Akai had just the right space for this.
