[sdiy] tanh distortion in a filter

This got my interest.

Assuming work in the digital domain:

Is tanh distortion something that works in a filter like a state variable?

If so, where does the distortion go?

What does it do? (as in what does it sound like?)

I assume tanh is something probably best implemented as a table - or is
there a reasonably good simply implemented approximation that can be used?

Any caveats?

Thanks for your thoughts...
