[sdiy] F2V with PIC or AVR?

Think it depends on what you want to do.

Sample a complex audio signal (a mix of multiple frequencies) and
exstract the main pitch OR simply convert a frequency to a voltage?

The first case needs quite some computing power, the latter is easy.

Use a timer in capture mode to get a numerical value from a frequency.
Then a other timer in PWM mode to do the DA.
The uC only has to wake up for the interupts,
however a higher clock speed will give you beter frequency resolution

Then again a analogue freq to voltage converter is even more straight foreward.
Let the frequency trigger a (narrow) pulse and run the pulses through
a LP filter.

Cheers
