It seems to me that if one is to write down a patch (which I have never
done, but I do regret not doing it in a few cases), one could resort to
clock-face analogies (set CV2 to 7:00 o'clock). However, this is easily
done whether there are markings on the panel or not, simply by looking at
the knob pointer. However, in my experience, for many patches the
difference between awesome and ordinary is often down to very tiny tweaks on
one or two knobs which could scarcely be notated, and must rely instead
solely on ones ears.
Having said this, I did have an epiphany the other day on this very topic:
Why not snap digital photos of the modular panel as a way of archiving
patches? This would sure beat the tedium of writing down the setting of
every knob and the routing of every patch cord!
