One reason for this is that the muscle activation and tonus is much more 
easily picked up than any signal from nerves.  In fact you get so much more 
signal from a muscle that it is quite difficult to separate the brainwaves 
from all the electrical "noise" the facial muscles and large muscles in the 
upper body make.
