Try shorting the 9V battery terminal. (use a screwdriver like Bob Weigel
recommends :^) If you see a spark, the battery has enough current to
potentially damage the plating on the plug
(note: do not try the screwdriver test on car batteries...)

You must use some big batteries !!!, I doubt if charging a PP3 size
battery would
cause much damage, even a high capacity one. Ansmanns 9V NiMH battery is
just 250mAh.
