It's often that brown "varnish" that accumulates over time. Pure 
isopropyl alcohol (90% or better) on a cotton swab usually does a good 
job cleaning it.
A drop or two of Caig DeOxit D-100 or G-100 ( the Cramolin of the 21st 
century :-) ) on a swab works great too (stay away from blasting the 
whole thing with the spray can stuff).
Try the alcohol first - it's much cheaper, and has usually always worked 
for me.
