My dad (N6KEN) got his general license in the 80s after many years of
on-again-off-again effort, and then found that he really didn't have
anything to say to the other hams.  He ended up selling his gear and never
looking back.  It was one of those things that seemed a lot cooler before he
actually had it, I guess.  I think modular synths are a bit that way as well
(anathema, I know, but there it is).
