One word for you: RTOS

You'll either end up coding your own, or using an existing one. There 
are some free ones available. FreeRTOS seems to be pretty well regarded 
and is used on a lot of architectures so you won't be painting yourself 
into a corner with it. It's available for dsPIC/PIC24 too.
