NIST traceability in this context means they probably did everything correctly.
It is not important unless your gig requires traceability. One thing you should
look for on new gear that sez its calibrated is a certificate of calibration
that shows the gear that was used was calibrated.

So i'm on the hunt for a new multimeter and was looking through old threads in
the archives, finding the Extech MM560A to be a good candidate. However there's
two options, one that's NIST certified and one that is not - how important is
this? Would the non-NIST basically be uncalibrated? It's a pretty big difference
in price on the meters, $239 vs $314 so i'm wondering.. ..any help appreciated!
