Musical application-wise, a varactor would work very well in a master
oscillator for a top-octave generator or other
divide-down/beat-frequency designs, although the voltage control range
isn't very wide.
There is enough voltage-control for adjusting the tuning over several
semitones and easily adding vibrato.
The master oscillator in the Eminent/Arp Solina (and probably the
Eminent 310U) uses a varactor diode.
