I would say that the Student Guide is essentual for using The Art of
Electronics. It fills in a lot of details and has a lot of things that
aren't in the book.

But in general I'm not a big fan of The Art of Electronics either. The
basics haven't changed all that much and it is a decent reference for
that. A number of things are dated now and there has been a lot of
changes and advancements in components which aren't in there. The
computer section is so dated that it should be removed from the book.
Usually I'll go to my ARRL Handbook (Radio Amateurs Handbook)first. To
me that would be the 'Best kept secret of amazing electronics books'.
