If you add k independent, centered, gaussian sources of variance
sigma^2, the variance of the sum is k sigma^2.
If you multiply a gaussian source of variance sigma^2 by a constant k,
the variance of the product is k^2 sigma^2.

So in one case, the RMS raises linearly while it raises in n^0.5 with
independent sources.
