Or write the grant proposals. If you just want to keep doing what others 
tell you, you don't need a fancy degree.  Whenever a tech starts mouthing 
off about how they do all the work, and the staff doesn't know what they 
are doing, etc., I just invite them to contribute to the next program 
review, or come up with some novel project and write a proposal for 
it.  That has never failed to shut them up.  I'm not putting down being a 
tech.  A good one is a tremendous asset.  And most of them seem to have 
happier lives than the folks who have the bottom-line responsibilities.
