[sdiy] Odd transistor connection, why???

[cheater cheater]

The base shorted with either the collector or emitter mean the
transistor is in diode mode. This means it works like a diode, except
that, I understand, the current it can take is only very small in
comparison to the current that can flow through the transistor.
