This was exactly my point. Although, I've seen mallet players resting  
their mallets on the keys while not playing too. Perhaps for that  
very reason?
(BTW, is "keys" the correct term here?)

Sure, when playing a big vibraphone or marimba with both hands, you  
can often hardly see at the same what both hands are doing time  
because they are so far apart.
