The 741 is a good general purpose op amp and is still available I 
believe..the 1458 is the dual version.  But if you need low noise, low 
offset, high input impedence. slew rate etc. then you should look 
elsewhere.  The LM308 is hard to find often but it's a much better 
design..lower offset and higher impedence by far as i recall.  NE5534 is 
one of the better commonly used ones I think.  Lots of high end mixers 
used them.  But then people want even more performance and sometimes 
replace them with higher dollar burr brown units.  For most things 
though the 5534 is pretty good.  If you need real high impedence Jfet 
amps like the TL081 or 071 or for low power 061 are the baseline.  And 
various mosfet options if you need even higher for sample/hold cells 
etc.  CA3130 etc.  -Bob
