At first these were my thoughts too. But then, the electronic
(analog) sequencer allows for twiddling the knobs and altering the
reset point on the fly, even while it's playing. A Pianola at least
requires to punch a card to change the program.
There were automatic pianos that allowed for real-time input, like
the Welte-Mignon.
