Yup - they're required to turn in a *brief* report, explaining what choices they made and why (and I tell them "tried different resistor values until it sounded the coolest" is perfectly legitimate in this class). In some cases the report will be "I built this" and a link to the schematic, more or less. I used to require significant changes; I've now figured out that they have so little experience debugging mysterious circuits from dubious internet sources (vs. the circuits in our lab manuals, that have been built by thousands of students over the past decade) that just getting a circuit working is a sufficient amount of work. I'll put these on a website.

One they get their breadboard working, then they build an "in solder" version - so yes, that's the plan. ;)
I insist on seeing something working on the breadboard, but I know only a subset of the final "in solder" boards will work. I'm less strict about it working since there's so little time left; I just want them to have the experience of trying to lay something out on perfboard (or veroboard or stripboard or whatever) and to see they put in a good-faith effort.
