I did that. Rolling your own inductors is easy but it is less fun than
it sounds... :-)

You get some nice options though. Add a second winding and run some
(voltage controlled?) constant current through it. That way you can bias
the magnetic field or even saturate the magnetic core. This gets you the
sound of the asymmetric distortion effects of an inductor driven hard
even at low signal levels.
