Is this a legato vs non-legato thing? If yes, MIDI allows a  
distinction (for monophonic synths). If the note on of a new note  
comes after the note off of the previous one, it's not legato, so  
trigger a new envelope. If the note on of a new note comes before the  
note off of the previous one, it's legato, so continue the envelope.
