I've used a hot air gun to solder surface mount boards. It worked
surprisingly well (a customer's reflow oven broke down, and we did two
dozen fairly large boards with a heat gun - had one guy hold the board
with high-temp gloves while I watched the reflow and made sure I
didn't overheat the boards). For through hole parts, I'm not so sure
how you would apply enough solder. I guess you could use solder paste
there? Other SMT soldering techniques like a toaster oven might work
just as well.
