[sdiy] sliders on panels

Guys,
I have to mount a couple of sliders on an old mixing desk.
I need to use screws as the new sliders don't fit the original PCB. 
Luckily I have plenty of space behind the panel to be creative.
I've got two options:
Use spacers or
use a second plate to mount the sliders on and mount this second plate 
to the front panel.

I'm wondering if there would be an impact on 'stability' when using the 
spacers as the 'contact surface' is smaller.
I hate these 'woglly' sliders.

Any advice appreciated.
