[sdiy] Creating a 'generic' Gate/Trigger/Pulse

Hey all,
My own research is turning up conflicting answers on this, so I'm throwing it to the list.
I'm working on a percussion oscillator based on the classic Twin/Double/Bridge T circuit.
I'm using an audio signal to trigger it which is any mono, line level, short-duration, sharp-attack sound. Kick, Snare, Clap-style sounds work perfectly.
I'd also like to have a trigger in from the output of e.g. a XOX box or some type of Trigger/Gate output capable synth.
If I go for a +5V pulse with a rising edge as my 'standard' - would that sort it? Is there something more 'common' - or am I just asking for trouble inviting people to stick voltages into my poor little circuit (which, TBH, they seem to do anyway).
Thanks much,
Justin
