Also, in phase distortion synthesis, the start and end also happened at the right time but the passage of the phase through the cycle was distorted. Using a fast advance of the phase through the first quarter cycle, then a slow passage through the 2nd and 3rd quarter and the last quarter being fast again would yield a saw looking waveform. There are better explanations than this on the net.
