Yeah, I looked. Holy Dinah! What the hell are those bad boys used for?!?
Oh, I see: "high-reliability avionics and military devices." Sounds a bit
like those famous $6,000 toilet seats to me....
You know, the legend of Tantalus (from which tantalum gets its name --
incidentally, Tantalus was the father of Niobe, from which niobium gets its
name...) is a pretty tawdry story of infanticide, human sacrifice, and
cannibalism. There was a special place in hell reserved for Tantalus, who
was forever cursed to stand knee-deep in water under a fruit tree with a big
threatening rock over his head. Whenever he tried to reach for the fruit it
would rise beyond his grasp, and whenever he tried to get a drink, the water
would recede. This is where we get our word "tantalize", which means
temptation without satisfaction.
Sounds a bit like synth DIY...
