Dan isn't a 'big company' - nor is he facing a choice of 'if it's not perfect then it's a failure'.
The internet is awash with suppliers (oh - and people who will find fault...) and if he's come this far he should be able to source a good looking, well made, stock knob at a realistic price in a style and colour that will compliment his current design.
He can buy without a minimum quantity and if it goes well - he can buy more knobs at a moments notice. If it goes butt up - he can sell the spare knobs on eBay. As Paul pointed out - giving two manufacturers the same RAL/Pantone number is no real guarantee that your colours will match.
If Dan had a list of backup suppliers or the time and money to spare getting everything 'just so' - then he probably wouldn't be posting messages with "EMERGENCY" in all caps.
Yes, his product needs to look s**t hot - but it also needs to make a profit.
Now that I've waved the flag of capitalism so furiously I must go wash my hands... and plant a tree. Yuk.
