I just built a VCA, design by Marc Bareille. Very nice, but already I can
see I would like to change a couple of things. He based his around a SSM2164
and a linearization method in the July 25, 2002 edition of EDN, page 90,
http://www.edn.com/contents/images/72502di.pdf

This tidbit makes it very easy to make a linear or exponential VCA with very
few components.

I've been looking around at other's VCA designs, but I've yet to see another
one based on the 2164; why? The chip isn't dirt cheap, $6.00 at DigiKey for
a DIP package but certainly not prohibitive. The wiring seems straight
forward enough even for me to deal with. Marc's design is very straight
forward, but like I said, I'd like to mix things up a bit.

Why don't people use the 2164 for VCAs?

David
