Grab a circular grinder, a finer wheel, strap the faceplate down and hold
on tight.
It's done using short, light touches with the grinder. Map out the plane in
your head (that's like "overlapped scallops") and keep to it. Once you
start, you're kinda' locked in.
If the metal is soft enough (i.e., aluminum) you can use a buffing wheel on
the grinder. That's easier and much more forgiving.
