Being a SW requirements junkie, I can say all your questions have a will viable set of answers *if* you can provide numerical values for your requirements.  You state "fast", "robust", and "simple" but those terms mean different things to different people even in different applications.

I've found the more you can quantify your problem, orgainize it (and write it down), the better you can zero in on a solution.  At some point, it might even become obvious.
