No experience doing what you're doing exactly but two points:

1.  Are you certain this isn't simply a transmission line issue
ignorable in the port (as opposed to bus) configuration?
I.e. if you terminate the chain or do 1-to-N fanout at the
sender it will work?

2.  I2C *is* a bus protocol (an annoying one) and might work
the way you need.
