Just add an inline full wave rectifier circuit in series, and you can
ensure that no matter what they plug in (center positive/center
negative/ac) your circuit still is powered correctly,. You just need
to add headroom to your input to account for the diode loss (plus the
regulator loss) If you want 9VDC out, a 12VDC would probably be rjust
about right on the money
TI and National both make a bazillion regulator chips that take wide
input ranges and are very low noise output. Even better, they have
tools that will take your voltage/current specs and generate a custom
reference design complete (TI often has the option to order the pcb,
chip and parts for your design)
Once you get a good PS design dialed in and proven, you can reuse it
over and over again.
