[sdiy] power woes

The ones that cause hum (what kind of hum?) may not be capable of supplying adequate current.

The ones that cause whine (what kind of whine?) could be interfering in a variety of ways.  If the voltage coming from the adapter is noisy, try a snap-on ferrite choke thing, like the Evolver has on its power supply.  It could also be some sort of RF interference with your circuit.
