Just a quick check on the web brings this up. It lists a number of ways to get the chip working including a "simple" PC parallel port setup and a PIC version (open source).

On a related note, I've had a 6581 in my chip bin forever and never done
anything with it. Are there any simple kits that use it that don't
require a waiting list or $500?
