If it is true that operating wiht the neg rail disconnected fries the chip,
one would have to be careful about what happens as the + and -
power rails turn on.
This is one of the difficulties of SDIY - dealing with direct coupled
signals all over the place, including connecting systems with completely
separate power supplies.
Unfortunately, anything that you can imagine will probably happen one day..
