OTOH, it would still be quite unexpensive to make 48x the (simple) analogue 
signal path of a 3100, but without any trimpots or component selection, and 
adjust everything with a huge multiplexer and clever stimuli all in the 
digital domain.
Thinking of it, that way a dream-polyphonic of mine could be realized: a 
3100 VCF/VCA/EG bank married with individual oscillators a la PE1000.
