It's the latter. The way Robin installed it, which was pretty ingenious, 
is to put an 1/8" jack on the front panel that inverts the CV, then a 
small patch cable with a 1/8" jack on one end and a matrix pin on the 
other. That way, wherever you put the pin in the matrix you get an 
inverted signal.
