I think there was a littel more to it than mere surface protection,
it was alleged to be conductive (at least at the very short ranges 
involved).
I remember someone - I think Kevin Lightner - being rabidly opposd to
its use on the grounds of gradually corroding some materials.

Anyway, I think the patent expired a year or two ago, so maybe it is
available cheaper now for the experimentally inclined.
