I'm not sure about that.  It depends on what you want.  2164 expo converters
obviate the need for temperature-compensating resistors.  However, as I've
discovered, they do not necessarily give very consistent log conformance.
For this, one really must use special-purpose transistor pairs.

I would say that the degree of log conformance determines the quality of an
expo converter.  2164, whilst being very convenient, is only average in this
regard.
