[sdiy] Roland TR-808 + 909 CPU Failure

Is there very common in TR-808--the reason I ask is my friend CEM3374  
just had to replace one in his TR-808 and said it was not surprising  
for a 30 year old machine
If so where does that leave current owners eg at risk as there are no  
more spares to be had as far as I know from Roland AU or Japan I assume

I have seen this a couple of times with TR-909
