I wrote recently, elsewhere, on the subject of guitar pickups (has a similar mind set to audiophilia - pickuphilia perhaps :) ) that most of the odd things that happen in both worlds are based on sensible physics but that a little understanding is taken way too far and soon takes on voodoo like status hyped by a number of practitioners who possess an equally small understanding, if any. For instance, guitar leads and speaker leads can make a difference, but if you do not understand what is going on or why, simply paying exorbitant prices for something is not going to be the universal panacea that you think it is, other than perhaps for the vendor!
Myrtle is a pretty good choice for this application given it's use in electric guitar and bass making. There other similar choices but Myrtle is relatively cheap.
