Wow, nice to see the Roman has really brought this to life, I remember a
thread about him starting this a while back on VSE.  One question though,
maybe I am missing something but there does not seem to be anything
available for download atm..

+1 for ctrlr. If I had to write a standalone editor (and I probably
will have to in the next months), I would start from here.

Another GUI framework I recommend: libnui. http://www.libnui.net/
Open sourced, used in some pro audio apps. It's easier to "skin" and
give the widgets a pro look than on other frameworks.

A nice library abstracting platform specifics and providing a unified
MIDI API is PortMIDI:
