I've tried and I used to do all my projects that way. But not now, if I 
want to do a one off audio project I'll do it on stripboard. It's 
compact, cheap and reliable. And I've sort of got the hang of knocking 
out a board direct from the schematic.

It's easy to change too so you can change it without feeling that you're 
ruining something finished - PCBs with track cuts are just so ugly.

I'm not using SMD though - now that would be another matter entirely.

For anything that uses multiple copies of the same thing - vocoders, 
polysynths and mixers - I'd go for PCBs but I'd go the PCB Cart route 
and not DIY now.
