I actually have.  I even used an analog input on the AVR I to monitor
the V+ so it would vary the rate of the little engine that could.  It takes
a few support parts to make it into a drop-in replacement.

To be fair, running one pin high makes it into a real noise source, I just
like the sound of the 5837 for some things.  :-)
