It's a way to get a dual-detuned saw type effect from a single SAWTOOTH
wave - a bit like PWM on a SQUARE, but with the SAW sound.

Scott Bernadi has some info on an 8-stage version here;
http://home.comcast.net/~sbernardi/elec/og2/og2_waveanim.html
It is in some ways similar to the Timbre modulator mentioned by the
original poster. Check out some of the sound samples...

Yves Yusson has a 2-stage one here;
http://yusynth.net/Modular/EN/SAWANIM/index.html

Bridechamber do PCBs for that implementation here;
http://www.bridechamber.com/bridechamber.com/Yu_Saw_PCB.html

Ken Stone does a module that can be pressed into service to do it here,
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs38_saw_pitch_shift.html
if 2 LFOs are added, and a couple of mods are done (I've successfully
tested a 2-stage version using this PCB and a CGS58) and am working on
my own custom version of the circuit (if I ever get the time to finish
it....)

It's a very useful, and much overlooked module IMO. I believe a
DIGISOUND VCO module had a saw animator built-in?

cheers,
Dave
