Good idea, for super cheep use the pin arrays sold as toys, you know the
long pin ones that slide in frame and are used to give you a 3d image of
whatever you press against the back side?

Had a dumb idea that is kinda growing on me in a steampunk sorta way...

Get some of those spring loaded pins like used in bed-o-nails testing rigs (
look in Digikey at MIll-Max, like the ED8186-ND ).
Hinged top has X by X matrix of pins.  Bottom has X by X matrix of contacts
( heavy copper PCB with gold plating? ).  Punch holes in a card to select
your patch.  Insert.  Close lid.  It'd actually be really close to the
original Hollerith census tabulators.

Not only is it overly complicated, but it has shiny gold ( with lots of
places to put decorative LEDs! ) and you have the possibility of a hanging
chad screwing up your patch.
